What the Cadastre is, and why it matters
The Cadastre (Catastro) is Spain's official property register: a government record of every parcel of land and building in the country, including size, use, build year and construction details. It exists mainly for tax purposes (it's what local property tax, IBI, is calculated from), but it's also the closest thing to an authoritative, public history for any individual property.
It's operated by the Dirección General del Catastro, part of Spain's Ministry of Finance, working through local land registry offices across each province, separate from, but linked to, the Property Registry (Registro de la Propiedad) that records ownership. Records are updated on an ongoing basis as changes are declared or detected (new construction, renovations, subdivisions), though in practice updates can lag behind what's actually built on the ground by months or years.
Because it's a public register, anyone can look up the official data for a given parcel. That's what this tool does: click a point on the map, or search an address, and pull that property's government record directly: build year, registered size, use and other historical details, without needing to know how to navigate the Catastro's own systems.
